Chapter 10

Teddy

We crouched in the underbrush and studied the barn. Liam had reassured me that we shouldn’t be in any danger from the local wildlife, and I trusted that he knew what he was talking about.

I wasn’t excited about going up against a bunch of mages, but we had to rescue the wolf pup before they vanished with it. In cases like this, you really didn’t have a lot of time to wait around for backup. That, more than anything, is what convinced me we should probably go in without the others.

“See anything?” I whispered.

“No. They’re either relying on modern surveillance and magic, or they’re very overconfident.”

“We should send a message to the others, so they know where we’re at,” I insisted.

Liam pulled out his phone, stared at it for a moment, brow furrowed, then shoved it back in his pocket. “No reception. Perhaps it is blocked somehow?”

“Fantastic,” I muttered sarcastically. “Okay, let me see if I can do anything to make the wards visible.” Though I had no idea what I was doing, I thought back to when we had released the tiny fae from her prison. Taking the same shape of the magic I sang softly, trying to enhance what I saw, not touch the magic around us.

“Hey,” I exclaimed in surprise. “It worked.”

“Can you still see them without singing?”

“It’s going to fade, I can already tell, but yes.”

Liam studied me for a moment before shrugging, as if at some sort of internal conflict. “Let me see if I can do it. Try again.”

I picked up the song, and Liam, somehow embracing siren abilities I was sure he hadn’t possessed before, echoed what I did.

“Yes, that worked.”

“What did you do?”

“I’ve had enough of your blood that I can access your siren abilities through it. Also, not something that is common knowledge.”

“How come you couldn’t do it before?”

“Some powers are easier to access than others, and I suspect I’m still getting used to the changes I’ve experienced recently. I will have to try harder to use new powers.”

“Okay, so now what?”

“There are holes in the wards,” Liam said. “Since we can see them, we should try to work our way through. We need a way to conceal ourselves from the cameras that are probably there.”

“Do you mean I need a way? Because I’m guessing you’ve got that covered.” I nudged his shoulder with mine.

Liam glanced at me, a smile playing across his lips. “Yes, that’s what I meant.”

I sighed and nodded. “I’m not sure if I can do both at once.”

“You can.”

He might have just been saying that to reassure me, but he said it with such conviction I believed him.

“I think this is outside normal siren duties,” I muttered. “I’d feel a lot better if we were in the water.”

“So would I,” Liam said, though I could feel a hint of surprise ripple through him through our bond.

I did some mental gymnastics and managed to alter my song so that it should hide me from view.

Liam nodded approval and gestured for me to follow him.
